GUIDELINES & TIPS
TO MAXIMISE PERFORMANACE OF YOUR CLIPPERS & BLADES.
Horses should be washed. Hair should be dry and completely dirt free. Sand & special surface material particles from gallops and arenas left in coats is almost impossible to completely remove but will greatly reduce clippers & blades performance.
(1)Clippers should be stored in warm & dry area to ensure that machine does not become damp which may cause corrosion & damage to internal parts, how about your hot-press?
(2)It is important that you fully clean your clipping machine after each use, but for long term storage the machine must be left up fully cleaned and properly oiled. Long term storage of dirty clippers greatly reduces the life of your equipment. During clipping, dip the head of machine in container of methelayted spirits (as machine is running) to clean head area completely of all hair & ensure no dirt builds up to block oiling access hole. For storage used blades can be lightly sprayed with WD40 to prevent rusting.
TO PREVENT YOUR MACHINE FROM OVERHEATING – IT IS VITAL THAT YOU KEEP THE AIR INTAKE FILTER CLEANED DURING USAGE BUT MORE IMP0RTANTLY AFTER EACH USAGE TO REMOVE THIS FILTER AND WASH IT WITH WARM WATER & WASHING UP LIQUID AS IT GETS EASILY CLOGED UP. THIS WILL ADD LIFE TO YOUR MACHINE.
(3)Use only proper (SAE 30) clipping machine oil, never use WD40 or 3in1 type oils as they do not properly lube either the machine or blades. We have found cases of spray oil getting sucked into machine head & drawing in dirt, clippings & oil down into clippers. Milking Machine oil (available from your local farmers coop) is a very cost effective solution for larger yards.
(4)Before clipping –(Using a small oil can or old syringe) Oil the blade grinding-plates with a trickle of oil, then fit in machine & oil the machine via access hole. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO OIL THE TOP OF THE CUTTERS HEAD AS IT ONLY SERVES TO CLOG THE MACHINE WITH HORSE HAIRS. Clean the machine regularly during usage (see 2 above) and re-oil every 5-10 minutes.
(5)If your clippers has a removable head, ensure that it is screwed back tightly but more importantly that the threads are correct otherwise these will cause long term damage to your machine head.
(6)A bend in the tension set screw only serves to wear your machines head, which will over a short period of time cause damage to your machine & blades. We suggest you keep a replacement tension set to hand.
(7)When changing blades in your machine do this over a table with an old blanket or numnah underneath thus reducing the risk of dropping and causing damage to blades and machine. –
(8)Ensure the air vent is kept clear at all times – remove from machine & run under tap to clean – replace only when dry.
(9)If clipping a large number of horses, if possible, it is advisable to use a number of machines in sequence, ensuring you avoid any particular machine overheating too much. Tension set should be as loose as possible (to help keep your machine cool) but also tight enough to enable you clip. Refer to manufacturers instructions for correct tensioning procedure.
(10)Please ensure you do not fit blades which are no longer usable. The grinding plates should not be worn down level with the cutters or combs base. (We will demonstrate this to you on our visit) We recommend you use the manufacturers recommended blades for your machine. We do not recommend blades which do not carry any manufacturers name or details.
(11)If you hear a grinding or ‘bad sounding’ noise from your machine, switch off immediately. Avoid further usage until machine has been serviced. Such action may prevent damage to machine head, gears and motor burning out if serviced in time.
(12)Prior to sending for re-sharpening – ensure blades are dry and clean from dirt and oil.
(Please ensure you also follow instruction manual specific to your own machine)
